Orbit Thin-Cutting Frame Saw

The Neva Orbit Thin-Cutting Frame Saw, imported by Ogden Enterprises, is designed to cut thin slats from solid wood blocks with minimal waste from saw kerf. The saw uses multiple, thin, rectangular blades, .049" thick, that move up and down as the wood block feeds through.  Its patented saw frame movement allows the blades to be retracted out of the cut during the up-stroke resulting in better removal of the wood chips from the saw blades. The advantage is dust-free veneers, reduced heat build-up, and longer saw blade life. The rapid (approximately 450 strokes per minute), reciprocating blades produce an ideal surface for face-glueing.

ADVANTAGES OF THE NEVA ORBIT FRAME SAW VS OTHER FRAME SAWS

1.  The biggest advantage is the new patented movement of the saw frame.  The Orbit utilizes a totally new up/down method of movement for cutting veneer slats.  Unlike conventional frame saws which move up and down in a lineal motion, the Orbit utilizes a patented swing out motion at the bottom of the saw stroke.

During the downstroke of the saw frame, the cutting motion is perfectly lineal.  At the bottom of the stroke, the saw frame swings out of the cut in the same direction that the wood is moving.  Once the saw frame has retracted out of the cut, the frame travels back to the top, remaining out of contact with the wood during the entire upward motion.  The saw frame then once again begins its lineal downward cutting motion.

This unique movement has several distinct advantages over the frame movements on the older, conventional frame saws.  With other frame saws, a great deal of heat is generated by sawdust that is captured/packed into and around the saw blade teeth.  This occurs because the sawdust and wood chips are unable to clear out from the blade during the up-stroke.  This fact is especially true when cutting high, as some of the teeth in the center of the saw blades never clear out of the cut.  Because the Orbit saw frame moves out of the cut during the up-stroke, wood chips and sawdust fall clear from the saw blades and from between the saw teeth gullets.  The result is less heat build up on the saw blade, up to 50% longer saw blade life, dust free slats, a more accurate slat tolerance (since the saw blades do not expand because of heat build up), and the ability to use a thinner kerf saw blade.

2.  The Neva machine splits in the middle for easy saw frame removal.  This system was developed to make it easier and safer for the operator to remove and mount the saw frame in and out of the machine.  On other systems the operator must climb up on top of the machine in order to remove and mount the saw frame.

3.  The machine comes with an adjustable chip breaker.  This chip breaker is made out of phenolic and supports the wood from the bottom during cutting.  It can be adjusted so that the saw blades cut into the phenolic support.  The chip breaker prevents the wood from chipping out on the bottom of the slats as the saw blades exit the bottom of the wood.  Many machines do not have this feature, and without the chip breaker, the slats will often have splinters on the bottom and on occasion these splinters will jam in between the saw blades and bend them.

4.  On the Orbit, all of the feed rolls on the bottom are driven.  Some of the feed rollers on the top are also driven.  On most frame saw machines, only the bottom rollers are driven.  Because the Orbit has top driven rollers this makes the machine feed smoother without the wood hanging up.

5.  The Orbit comes standard with electronic feed speed adjustment.  When the operator wants to go faster or slower, he simply presses a button on the control panel and the feed speed is adjusted via a servo.  In order to adjust other systems, you have to turn a hand wheel which is located on the out-feed on the bottom of the machine near the floor.  Because of this inconvenience, with other systems operators are less likely to change the speed according to the wood height or wood species.

6.  The Orbit comes standard with a digital feed speed indicator which is located on the control panel where the operator feeds the machine.  The feed speed LCD makes it very easy for the operator monitor and change feed speeds.  There is often no LDC feed speed indicator on other systems.

7.  Adjustment of the top feed rollers on the Orbit is made automatically.  To make an adjustment of the top feed rollers from one height to another the operator simply presses a button on the control panel and moves the rollers electronically up or down. This system is the same system that is used on molding machines.  The automatic height adjustment takes only a few seconds.  On other systems, each set of top idle rollers has to be adjusted manually via a wrench.  This manual adjustment can take as long as 10 minutes depending on how big the change in height is.
